Grace Paulk was born in Ocilla, Georgia, July 24,1913. After graduating from Georgia State College for Women in Milledgeville, Georgia, she began her teaching career in Homerville where she and Lawton met. They were married in 1938 and moved to Quitman.
Lawton and Grace were faithful members of the First Baptist Church in Quitman. Lawton served as a deacon for many years. Grace played the piano for her Sunday School class, was director of Vacation Bible School, delivered Home Life magazines to shut-ins, and taught a Bible study group which still bears her name. They both served on the building committee when the church built a new sanctuary in 1960.
Lawton inherited property in Valdosta from his father, Robert Edward Lee. Mr. Lee was a prominent citizen in south Georgia, serving several terms as a state representative. Part of this property, which Lawton's father lived on for a brief period, is now occupied by Crossing Jordan Baptist Church.
Lawton died May 8, 1974. Grace died October 5, 2000. They are survived by their two daughters: Alacia Lee Rhame and husband Donald of Macon, Georgia; and Lauren Lee Browder and husband Thomas of Niceville, Florida; four grandchildren: Todd Rhame of Cashiers, North Carolina; Lauren Rhame Coates and husband Justin of Stewartville, Minnesota; Thomas Browder III and wife Emily of Franklin, Tennessee; Grace Browder Gray and husband Kurt of Athens, Georgia; and four great grandchildren: Tyler and Alacia Grace Coates, and Anne Lawton and Creighton Browder.
